Chapter 8
Back in the hall, Dave Copper turned to Andy Constable.
âWhat next, then, sir?â
âWho rather than what, I think, sergeant. Weâre overdue for a chat with the vicar, if heâs back in the land of the living. So letâs find out where theyâve put him.â He knocked on the door of the drawing room and led the way in. Six faces turned to him expectantly.
Lady Lawdown rose and crossed the room briskly towards the detectives. âDear inspector, I do hope you arenât going to keep us penned up in here all day. Have you managed to sort out this horrible business yet?â
Andy Constable smiled. âIâm sorry, your ladyship, but Iâm afraid these things take a little longer than that. But I think weâre making progress. In the meantime, Iâm afraid Iâm going to have to ask everyone to stay put for a little longer, if you donât mind. I know Miss Cook has managed to keep you supplied with provisions, and Iâm sure youâre not too uncomfortable in here. At least itâs a lot cosier than the police station.â
Lady Lawdown looked shocked. âThe police station?â she echoed. âDo you mean ⦠Are you seriously telling me that we are suspects? For heavenâs sake, man, look at us!â
Five pairs of eyes declined to meet the inspectorâs.
âIâm saying exactly that, Iâm afraid, your ladyship, unless and until I have better information which rules some or all of you out.â
âBut thatâs ludicrous!â retorted Lady Lawdown. âWhy on earth would any of us have the slightest reason to murder Horace Cope? Itâs far more likely to have been some hooligan from one of the other villages. I have them up in front of me all the time in the magistrates court. Thatâs it â itâs some sort of mugging or robbery, and someoneâs got carried away.â
âThat, I think, is one motive we can rule out,â replied Constable. âAs for others ⦠well, we shall just have to continue to investigate. Which leads me to my next question â can you tell me where the Vicar is? I need to find out what he can tell us.â
Lady Lawdown seemed to calm down a little. âOf course, inspector. Poor dear man, I hope heâs feeling up to speaking to you.â
âYou worry too much, Sandra,â interposed Seymour Cummings. âThe old boyâs been in the village for donkeyâs years. I should think there isnât much he hasnât seen. Heâs a tough old bird, inspector. I think youâll be surprised.â
Lady Lawdown looked unconvinced. âIf you say so, Seymour. Laura, I think heâs in the Chinese Bedroom, isnât he, darling. Show the gentlemen the way, would you. It seems the rest of us had better stay here, as the inspector insists. I think I need to make a telephone call.â
âIf youâd just lead on, miss,â said Constable, standing aside for Laura. He paused at the door. âBy the way, your ladyship, if itâs not too much of an inconvenience, Iâd be glad if you didnât make any telephone calls just for the moment.
